Vampire Diaries Episode 201 – The Return
The cliffhangers from season one of Vampire Diaries were essentially the facts that Jeremy downed a vial of vampire blood followed by a bottle of pills so that he will die and reawaken as one of the undead. Downstairs on the front porch Damon and Elena share a kiss before she goes inside to attack her Uncle John by stabbing him. As the last episode closed we see that it was not Elena at all, it was Katherine and we also wonder what will become of Jeremy. We are also left not knowing why the vampire weapon affected Tyler Lockwood causing him to crash his car and if his passengers are all right.
Thus we “Return” with episode one of season two. Elena (the real one) enters her home and finds John on the floor struggling for his life. She calls 911 and then suspecting her brother might also have been attacked she goes upstairs to find Jeremy. As the paramedics take John away Stephen evaluates Jeremy and determines that Jeremy didn’t take enough pills to kill himself and the the vampire blood helped heal him, rather than allow him to die.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Carolyn is fighting for her life after Tyler’s car accident. Liz shares with Damon that the weapon effected the Mayor and that he was killed along with the vampires in the fire and that her daughter’s situation is precarious. Bonnie talks Elena into allowing Damon to give Carolyn his blood so that she can be healed and while they are discussing that Damon and Elena trade stories about their evening and they don’t match up. After seeing the same thing play out with Elena and her Aunt, Damon realizes in dismay that it was Katherine at Elena’s house that night and it was Katherine he kissed.
Katherine returns to Elena’s home pretending she has come home from the hospital and tries to fool Stephen in much the same way she did with Damon. Stephen almost immediately senses that it is Katherine though and they fight until Elena and Damon walk in. Katherine flees and they bring each other up to speed. Damon admits that he kissed Katherine thinking it was Elena and this enrages Damon. They almost fight before Elena implores them to focus on their bigger problems… such as Elena’s psychotic doppelganger.
Stephen: What happened tonight when you thought she was Elena?
Damon: To risk another frown line encroaching on a very crowded forehead.. we kissed.
Elena points out that John may know something about why Katherine has returned so Stephen and Elena go the hospital to interrogate him and check in on Carolyn who has made a miraculous recovery thanks to Damon’s blood. Damon goes to the Mayor’s wake to smooth things over with Liz. Tyler’s Uncle Mason makes an appearance and Damon is suspicious of him.
Katherine shows up at the wake as well and tells Stephen she is back because she loves him and wants him back. When his response is less than kind, she stakes him in the gut.
Elena and Damon have it out about the “kiss” and she hurts Damon when she tells him she never would have kissed him back. He is somewhat calmed when Stephen tells him they need to stand united and strong, not letting any of this come between their bond as brothers. Stephen also tells Damon that he doesn’t want to lose the side of his brother that cares for Elena, because it shows his humanity is still in tact.
Damon is okay briefly until Katherine comes to his home and makes a pass at him. But when Damon tries to get her to profess her love she tells him that she has only ever loved Stephen. This sends him over the edge and he visits Elena to and try force her into admitting that she has feelings for him but she too insists that Stephen is the one she loves. This means the two women who Damon has cared for in his long life both love his brother instead. Jeremy walks in on the conversation and Damon snaps his neck and throws him to the floor dead, walking away as Elena screams.
Elena cradles Jeremy’s body and Stephen arrives. Elena notices that Jeremy is wearing the family protection ring that belonged to Uncle John and he revives after a short time. Elena claims she hates Damon and will never forgive him.
Katherine goes to visit Carolyn in the hospital and tells her to deliver a message to the Salvatore brothers, “Game On”. Then she suffocates Carolyn.
