Screenrant recently posted some photos of Johnny Depp in character for his role as Barnabas Collins in the silver screen adaptation of Dark Shadows. The original show was a TV soap opera that had cult like popularity and apparently that fan base has LOTS of opinions about the film version. After seeing this first look I think those voices will get ever louder. With Johhny Depp and Tim Burton together I guess it makes sense that Barnabas looks less like the TV show version of the character and more like a cross between Edward Scissorhands and Willy Wonka. Woot! A new Underworld Awakening (Underworld 4) trailer has been released and it looks amazing!

Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

Full-On Goth. For those who like to live the vampire life, nothing can be more appealing than a full-on Goth-styled party complete with dark clothing, black crepe-draped furniture and tables, and a scattering of skulls and Evanescence playing in the background. There are so many decorations available that would appeal to this type of party, but if you want to make it truly memorable, create a theme such as characters from Anne Rice novels or even old Gothic romance novels to add a little pizzazz.

Party in Bon Temps – A True Blood Halloween or premiere party will bring in all the Truebies. Set the table with some “blood” Gelato (cranberries and raspberries) that you made earlier, waiting for it to set while playing partypoker, and some bottles of Tru Blood from HBO. Make it a viewers marathon by showing any season of True Blood seasons one, two, or three.

Halloween Twilight. The Twilight series of books and movies are still popular in many circles, so if you’re a Twilight fan, why not throw a Twilight-themed party? Seeing as that Twilight is based out of Forks, Washington, an outdoor party would give this the best ambiance – you can even duplicate Bella and Edward’s outdoor reception from book four with the hanging Japanese lanterns and flower, but don’t forget to add some glitter. Twilight vamps sparkle ya know!  You could also encourage guests to come dressed as one of their favorite characters from the books.

A Fan Fiction Writer’s Dream. Many of the vampire stories out on the market today have spawned fan-fiction websites where fans and avid readers can write their own chapters and stories. If you have a group of individuals who are into vampire fan fiction, throw a Fan Fiction Writer’s Dream party. This one would require a little advance planning. Let your guests know that they will need to write a chapter or story based on their favorite vampire series or movie. Once they arrive, everyone can sit down and watch a favorite episode or movie (if everyone can agree on one) then have each person read their chapter or story out loud to the rest of the guests.

While this list is by no means all-inclusive, perhaps it will give you an idea, or at least start the creative juices flowing. With a little planning and imagination, your next Halloween party will definitely be one to remember!

I can wrap up this episode in one word.. YUCK!

I understand that all good series will usually have some filler episodes that do not advance the story much. This episode was one of those. But for the love of all that is holy can they not try to at least make an interesting filler?

The story of type 4 revolved around Annie finding and bringing home a zombie. That is a dead girl who still has a body. They cannot figure out why her body is still kicking, even if it is decomposing and at first they don’t care. Then they discover that she is part of a group of people who died around 2 weeks previous (when Mitchell went for a road trip in purgatory) and they regained consciousness after their deaths. The hospital staff tried all sorts of gruesome and painful things on them until finally opting to just burn them.. case closed. This dead girl, Sasha, managed to escape.

Annie tries to help Sasha cope by doing fun things with her and until she eventually loses consciousness and passes on. The episode was full of grotesque scenes (picking at black toenails and black bodily goo or pulling chunks out of her abdomen out after Sasha was impaled by her ex-boyfriend) and I could not help but be completely grossed out by them allowing a person to decompose on their couch, bed, etc. And I think ANY self respecting woman would not try to find a make-out partner at a local bar while she is two weeks into the decomposition process but maybe that is just me! Ew!

On a slightly brighter note though, Mitchell owns up to the fact that Annie has crush on him ever since he rescued her from purgatory. He is unsure if she should pursue a relationship or even how it would work but they kiss at the end so it appears they may try and see.

Hoping for a better episode next week…

Word from Monsters and Critics is that 50 year old Colin Firth will vamp it up soon in a new moved based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

A source told the publication: ‘It’s a surprise to see Colin take the role – it’s miles away from the comedies he’s famous for. It’s dark, modern and creepy. He’s going out on a limb with this part.’

He is no teenage sparkly vamp but I think that sounds appealing no? I think Colin Firth could bring some maturity and complexity not seen in vampires since Gary Oldman’s portrayal in Dracula, also based on Bram Stoker’s vision.

Already a fan of Firth in movies such as Easy Virtue and The King’s Speech, I can’t wait to see him don the creepy as a vampire.

Episode Two of Season Three – Adam’s Family

This episode centered upon Nina’s discovery of a teenage vampire feeding upon his now elderly father in the hospital. Despite his 47 years he is still mentally a teenage boy and has always fed upon his willing father in order to survive. His father passes though and Nina and George feel compelled to make sure he is okay, for himself and for other people who might become his unwilling victims.

Mitchell is opposed to the idea of having a feeding vampire in the house and nixes any ideas of his staying with them but he gives Nina the number of a vampire (Richard) who can help. Richard is a vampire who just previously tried to get Mitchell to leave Barry and go stay with the old ones (ancients) in Europe to avoid any trouble after the subway massacre. Mitchell refused.

Nina and George take Adam to Richard and they discover that he and his wife use a willing donor to feed off of. They are now on #7, who is a former family man who believes his life is happier now as a latex wearing, S&M puppet and blood bag. Adam is left in their care and in celebration they decide to drain #7 and engage in an orgy. But Nina and George think better of their decision and go back for Adam. He happily leaves with them and decides to try to be on his own. After watching him refuse the advances of a teenage girl, Nina and George think Adam will be able to make it on his own.

Being an American I had to wait to see the season three Being Human premiere seeing as how it is a BBC program. I tried the US version and quickly gave up on it. I just like Annie, Mitchell, Nina, and George too much! Anyway the premiere episode was only so-so.

The second season ended with Annie being dragged into a door (the afterlife). In the new season opener we see that Mitchell and Nina have devised a risky plan to get her back. They will hang out at the bedside of a dying man and Mitchell will hitch a ride with him into the afterlife where hopefully he can find Annie. They know from a brief appearance on their TV that she is in purgatory.. or some sort of holding area and the vibe is ominous. She is afraid she is being sent to hell. Mitchell goes into overdrive trying to get her back. Oh and for whatever reason the remaining three left their home for the first two seasons and moved into an old bed and breakfast.

Mitchell’s plan works and he manages to hitch a ride through a door. Perhaps because he is technically dead already (vampire) he can make the trip? Meanwhile George tried to find a place in the woods where he can transform (werewolf). Nina plans on transforming in their new basement because they are afraid they may try to kill each other if they wolf out in the same vicinity. George comes across some men in the park and he is arrested along with them for suspicion of dogging (outdoor sex). Nina manages to get him out and they transform in some sort of cellar nearby. They do not attack each other and in fact come to believe they had wolf sex instead.

Mitchell meets a gal named Lia when he goes through the door and she takes him on a journey to remember his past victims. The journey ends with the train massacre from the end of season two and he discovers that Lia was one of the victims. Lia allows he and Annie to go after much torment and tells him that he needs to survive so that he can play a part in someone else’s journey . He will be killed by a werewolf she tells him. This is problematic since he lives with two!

There was also a handful of scenes with a werewolf fighting match but I was incredibly uninterested in all of it. I liked the scenes with George and Nina the most. The Mitchell pain fest was kinda boring and long winded but improved at the end when he and Annie were reunited. I was completely confused as to why Lia kept making sexually suggestive comments to the guy who murdered her. Huh?? Oh well…

I give it 2.5 out of 4 stars.
