Blue Bloods Book Review

It is hard to find a REALLY good vampire series these days. So many authors are trying to cash in on the Twilight craze but few can come up with a really unique vampire storyline. Say what you will about Twilight, I happen to like it, but you must admit that it put a new spin on the world of vampire lore.

Blue Bloods also succeeds in doing this very well and I am really enjoying the series. It is essentially the story of Schuyler Van Alen, 15, the last of the line in a distinguished family. She lives in Manhattan with her aloof grandmother and she attends a prestigious private school. A murder at her school leaves her with many questions but not nearly as many as when she is invited to join a secret society that teaches her who or what she is. Schuyler, as well as many of her classmates, are actually vampires that refer to themselves as Blue Bloods, a nod to the blue veins that surface on their skin as they begin their transformation.

Blue Bloods are not new vampires though. They are old souls, fallen angels who were cast out of heaven for their role in Lucifer’s betrayal. Now they live like humans do except they are born into new bodies with new lives every “cycle” via a vampire reincarnation of sorts. Not only does the reader get to explore the current lives of the Blue Bloods through multiple points of view, they get to explore some of their past lives as well.

When they are 15-16 they start to have memories of their past lives and when they reach 21 they should fully remember who they are and all their past lives. They have a strict code that they adhere to.. not killing humans, remaining loyal to their twin soul (like a soul mate), and keeping their identities secret. Much of this is because they aspire to one day be welcomed back into heaven.

Not only does Shuyler have to deal with the knowledge of finding out she is a vampire (and different from all the other Blue Blood too) she is also torn between two boys. She knows that her best friend and human conduit, Oliver, is in love with her but she is drawn to the vampire Jack Force, who is honor bound to his vampire twin Mimi Force. Shuyler cannot think much about that though when it becomes clear that someone is preying on the Blue Bloods. By looking into their past, when a large group of Blue Bloods came to America on the Mayflower, she begins to suspect that an old enemy has resurfaced.. the Silver Bloods.

I LOVED this book. It had me hooked from the first few pages and I really enjoyed the idea of vampires that do not live in one body their whole immortal lives but rather transfer their blood and souls into new bodies to be reborn. It is such a unique concept. Each character seems to gain more depth with every turn of the page because we learn more about their feelings and actions in past lives and how they are trying to reconcile those with who they are in the present.

If you love vampire stories and want to read something truly unique, you can’t go wrong with Blue Bloods.
